It’s as simple as black and white.
[i]n 1 YEAR ORGANIC COTTON CAN SAVE UP TO…
- 218 BILLION litres of water – enough to fill 87,201 Olympic swimming pools.
- 288.7 MILLION kilowatts of energy – enough to power a household bulb for 549,314 years.
- 92.5 MILLION kg of CO2 – equivalent to driving a car around Earth 13,572 times.
[I]t reduces environmental impact
- Organic cotton is produced with zero hazardous chemicals, so doesn’t damage the soil.
- In comparison, non-organic cotton has been termed the ‘dirtiest crop on earth’, consuming 16% of global pesticides that are known to disrupt natural eco-systems.
- 1 non-organic cotton t-shirt requires 2,700 litres of water to make – enough water for one person to drink for 900 days.
- Organic cotton uses 88% less water and 62% less energy and produces up to 94% less greenhouse gas emissions than non-organic clothing.
[p]romotes safer working conditions
- GOTS certified factories are regularly inspected and certified to strict social criteria.
- Part of this criteria includes NO forced labour and NO child labour.
- GOTS certification specifies no use of hazardous chemicals and that all waste water must be treated, protecting employees and their water supply toxification.
[m]odel for the future
By 2025, two-thirds of the world’s population may face water shortages. But organic cotton is 80% rain-fed, which reduces pressure on local water sources. The absence of chemicals also means that water is cleaner and safer.
[w]e can make a difference
In 2015, 25 MILLION metric tonnes of cotton was produced globally, much of it for the clothing industry. Organic cotton made up less than 1% of this.
But this is on the rise! Between 2018/2019 organic cotton production increased by 31% with a total output of 239,787 metric tonnes. Find out more about OC production by clicking the button below!
